Speaking to a lot of clients they ask if they should submit a cover letter when applying to a job. In my experience, it depends on the job as well as your work experience. In industries such as Higher Education and Startups employers require cover letters as opposed to industries such as Finance and Tech which require only a resume.

Recruiters receive multiple applications a day and most seasonal recruiters take about 6 seconds to review each resume. Additionally, the biggest misconception is the idea that your cover letter will explain why you are a fit for a position. The truth of the matter is, if your resume does not have a direct correlation to the job you are applying for, then the cover letter won’t prove to be fruitful. Ultimately, it is your resume that is important, not the cover letter.
